MC.51: Trends and Surprises from the Gen AI Apps Landscape

Hey everyone,

The world of AI apps is exploding, but which ones are people actually using?

I've been digging into the data from the latest "Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps" report by Andreessen Horowitz, and there are some fascinating trends emerging:

Creative tools are dominating. Over half the top web apps are for content creation - images, video, music, you name it. And the new startups rising fastest are mostly in this space too. Check out Luma for video creation and Viggle to put any characters into motion.

ChatGPT is still king, but Perplexity and Claude are climbing the ranks as a real alternative. And on mobile, there's an assistant called Luzia gaining steam with 45 millions users. This Madrid-based startup targets Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries.

Bytedance is not resting on their TikTok success. The company launched 6 AI apps for different uses and markets, like Hypic and Coze.

A weird new category popped up: AI for aesthetics and dating. Apps like LooksMax AI and RIZZ rate your attractiveness and help craft dating messages. From the reviews, these apps looks more like scams than anything.

One of the most interesting part is about Discord. It’s like an incubator for AI apps. Many start there to build a community before launching standalone products: Suno, Midjourney and Viggle are great examples of this play.

Cheers,

Sam
