For a change, Google is the first to release its next-gen AI voice assistant with Gemini Live. It’s out on Android and Pixel 9 phones. Who could have bet that Google would release before OpenAI and Apple?

Key features:

  1. Super quick responses - it replies in less than two seconds!

  2. You can interrupt it mid-sentence, and it'll smoothly change topics.

  3. No need to type - just use your voice and keep your hands free.

  4. It won't sing or copy other voices.

  5. It can't understand videos yet.

I watched the interview between Rick Osterloh from Google and Joanna Stern from The Wall Street Journal. They talk and demo some features. It's supposed to be this super advanced, almost human-like AI. Reality otherwise tells a different story.

Rick starts with a simple chat with Gemini about what questions it thought Joanna would ask him during the interview and Gemini missed the point big time.

In the WSJ demo, Gemini couldn't even set an alarm. But it seems by now that it works through Extensions.

Google has a thing for failing demos, as it did twice during the Google I/O live demo. It’s not a smooth entry but at the same time, it shows the real state of AI: it’s not magical, it’s still software and it breaks here and there.

I don’t own an Android so super curious to get your feedback on your experience of Gemini Live.
