MC.41: Safe and Sound AI - Looking at Apple and Ilya Sutskever Strategies
Explore Apple’s deliberate pace in rolling out AI features, avoiding industry missteps, and dive into Ilya Sutskever’s bold new venture, Safe Superintelligence Inc
Just like the Slow Living movement, companies are taking their time to release AI features, starting with Apple, which will slowly rollout their Apple Intelligence features until 2025.
This can seem as deceiving but it's also the mark of Apple. They take the time to polish things and avoid misfires like Google’s: Gemini generating the Founding Fathers as black or Asian, AI overviews producing weird results.
They took 6 years (!!) to bring transcripts to their podcast app. Relative to that, they have been quick to integrate AI into their products. The key takeway from this WWDC: generative AI is a feature, not a product.
Similar signal is the new company of Ilya Sutskever. He's launching a venture called Safe Superintelligence Inc with two co-founders. Daniel Gross who led AI efforts from 2013 to 2017 at Apple and has been an investor in well-known tech companies like Uber, GitHub, Instacart, Character.ai, and Perplexity. Daniel Levy who worked at OpenAI for 2 years and will lead the research along side Ilya.
We will pursue safe superintelligence in a straight shot, with one focus, one goal, and one product. We will do it through revolutionary breakthroughs produced by a small cracked team. Join us:

They don’t talk about AGI. Their focus and roadmap is to build a Safe Superintelligence (SSI). They coin a new term along the way to differentiate themselves from the crowd. Smart, as seen in Google Trends.

It’s a long shot and a risky bet for investors. But with a team at this level, even if they don't achieve it, the research and knowledge gained will be valuable. Plus, acquihire activities for AI companies are accelerating, so movements in the years to come won’t be surprising.
Slowing down the pace is good for humanity: it gives us more time to adapt and brings a better user experience. However, only a handful of companies can take this path as it requires deep pockets and serious trust from investors.
Cheers,
Sam
