MC.33: Selling AI is Harder Than You Think

Explore Benedict Evans' take on AI's personal relevance gap, the hidden consultancy nature of many AI startups, and the layoffs at Tome revealing the tough realities of AI market challenges.

Hi everyone,

This week focuses on AI's occasional struggles to find its purpose.

On one side, lot’s of startups and VC money are fueling a revolution; on the other, companies and businesses have yet to adopt the technology, either due to a lack of know-how or AI startups not fulfilling their promises beyond the demos. After a year of experimenting, Ben Evans is still searching for AI use cases that benefit him, which says a lot about how the adoption might be slower than anticipated.

A new trend towards B2B use cases is emerging with models designed for businesses like DBRX and Snowflake Arctic. The market is nascent, and no one dominates like Salesforce in its category. ChatGPT Enterprise has 5% of the Fortune 500, while Salesforce has 90%. The bets are open, the journey has begun, and it is challenging.

Despite AI’s slow penetration into major companies, the story of the 9-year-old learning to code through AI demonstrates the technology's potential when the right use cases are identified.

I’m optimistic about the future, but it will take time. Unfortunately, a lot of money will be burnt; Humane and Tome are prime examples, and Devin is likely to be next.

Cheers,

Sam
